Community Calendar and Events

There is always some type of event going on in Newton County but the following is a list of the major events that take place each year.

THIRD WEEKEND IN APRIL Annual Spring Dogwood Tour. $5 per person. Buses leave from the Jasper Square. Bring a sack lunch. Call the Forest Service, (870) 446-5122 or County Agents (870) 446-2240 for reservations. Sponsored by Jasper School, U.S. Forest Service, Buffalo Ranger District, and Newton County Beautification Committee.

SECOND WEEK-END IN MAY  Kingston's "Fair on the Square" is an annual event held on the square in the quaint community of Kingston.  Friday nights activities include gospel singing and an auction. Saturdays activities include a parade, band, food, craft booths, children's activities, antique car show, log sawing contest, tractor pull and much more. For more information call 870-420-3731.

LAST WEEKEND IN JUNE Buffalo River Elk Festival - June 27 & 28. Hosted by Jasper Chamber of Commerce, with cooperation from Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Arkansas Game and Fish, this major event celebrates Newton County's title, Elk Capital of Arkansas with nature seminars, craft booths, demonstrations, conservation programs, contests, entertainment, fishing derby and other kids activities. 4TH OF JULY Deer Volunteer Fire Department Annual Celebration. Annual celebration held at the Deer School grounds, just two miles off Scenic 7 Byway on Scenic Highway 16. Old fashioned 4th of July festivities with plenty of food and ice cream, bingo, cakewalks, horseshoe tournaments, turtle races and other games and contests for all ages. Crafts Fair and good country and gospel music most of the day; then a brilliant fireworks display finale. Call 870-428-5906 or for information.

LAST WEEK IN AUGUST Newton County Fair & Rodeo - County Fair-grounds in Jasper. Carnival, Kids Day, truck pull, queens contest, parade, horse show. Call 870-434-5376 or 870-446-2270.

SECOND SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER - Newton County Gospel Sing, You'll enjoy a great evening of Gospel Singing at Bradley Park. Good Food & Great Music! Starts at 6pm. For additional information call 870-446-2633.

LAST WEEKEND IN SEPTEMBER - Newton County Bluegrass Festival, Join us at Bradley Park for two days of fantastic Bluegrass Music. There will also be a Car Show and Swap Meet, Arts and Crafts, Talent Show and Civil War Encampment. Plenty of Great Food and lots of Fun! Friday and Saturday at 6pm. THIRD FRIDAY IN OCTOBER Fall Foliage Tour - Buses leave from the gazebo on the Jasper Square at 9 AM and return at 2:30 PM. Fee is $5. Bring a sack lunch. For reservations, call the Forest Service at 870-446-5122, the County Extension Office at 870-446-2240.

BUFFALO NATIONAL RIVER EVENTS The National Park Service hosts a variety of events throughout the year including craft activities, slide shows and hikes. Check with the visitors centers or any ranger station for schedules.
